Pastor James Williamson, who has been referred to by many as the “Bishop”, is truly beloved by us all.
Born September 6, 1924, in Mellin, WV, he served his country in the Navy during World War II. He met the love of his life, Edna Grace Scott in June of 1948 during a revival in the church in Harrisville, pastored by Rev. C.E. Forbush. Less than one month later, on July 4, 1948, he received the baptism of the Holy Ghost, with evidence of speaking in other tongues as the spirit of God gave utterance. As he received the Holy Ghost, he heard the Lord speak to him over and over “My son, you will preach My Gospel,” although he did not notify Sister Edna of this for five years!
James Williamson and Edna Scott were united in marriage on October 30, 1949. They assisted Rev. C.E. Forbush in the church in Harrisville for eight years. In January 1957, they received a call from Bro. Forbush’s son who was holding revival services in Keyser, WV. The Forbush’s requested that the Williamson’s come and help them. During that visit to Keyser is when the Lord gave Bro Williamson a burden for the lost souls of Keyser. There were sixteen voting members on the church board in Keyser and it was unanimous in favor of accepting Rev. James Williamson as their new pastor. Together, Bro, and Sis. Williamson began a long and fruitful ministry. They have touched the lives of hundreds of people since March of 1957. Only eternity will reveal the true extent of their efforts.
Pastor Williamson served as Presbyter of Section 2 for many years and he is a great blessing to the UPCI. Pastor Williamson’s ministry has always been strong and founded in the word of God. He nurtured and gave birth to nine sons in the gospel: Michael Ray, Jackie Ray, Bill Palmer, Charles Johnson, Jim Beardsley, Bernard (Sonny) Bowman, Daniel Garlitz, Gary Arthur, and Bobby Gordon.
